Before you start with this video, please make sure that you watch my ‘counting music’ tutorial first! It’s very important that you fully understand the meaning of the terms “beats”, “bars” and “phrases”, and that you know what it means to start “on the one”. Do not underestimate the importance of being able to count music! Watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFcml2…

If you use equipment that has the SYNC function, you could use that to let the software beat match for you automatically, but I strongly advise you to learn how to beat match by ear. Being able to do that is always a good backup, because one day your sync function will not work (technical difficulty). More importantly, it’s a lot of fun!

If you want to make a smooth transition from the track that’s playing to the next song, you have to make sure that both tracks are playing at the same speed. A lot of times this means that you will have to adjust the tempo of the song that you want to add into the mix. In order to do this you will first have to find out if the new track is faster or slower than the track that’s already playing. Once you know this you can speed it up or slow it down until both tracks are playing at the same tempo. There are a couple of techniques you can apply to achieve this. Watch the techniques and see what works for you.

These are just basic beat matching techniques. In the next video we move on to advanced techniques.

This series could be perfect for you if you’re just starting, just bought your first DJ set (or controller) and you’ve been playing with your music for a while, but now you feel that it’s time to take it to the next level and learn how to mix and become a good DJ.

In this tutorial series I’m going to teach you the basics and show you all the ingredients you need to make a good mix. Make sure you start with part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyDbp…

Also, make sure that you watch my tutorial about counting music. Learn about beats, bars and phrases: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFcml2…
